Buffalo River (iQonce)
What actually happens
The town carries the river’s name: Qonce is the old Khoikhoi name for the Buffalo. Taps also run dry: in April and May 2026, Bhisho, Ginsberg, Breidbach and the upper CBD waited weeks for water, served by tankers.
Why people doubt it
Official warnings arrive late, in English, or not at all. People trust a neighbour’s shout more than a municipal SMS.
Where it could stick
The warning travels the way news already travels: a voice note to the street committee, the church bell, the neighbour. The sensor belongs to the ward, and a local person is paid to keep it alive.
From the classroom
Rain on the Amathole slopes reaches Qonce hours later. Measure the rain up there and you can tell Ginsberg when the water will rise.
Imagine
What if the river could warn Ginsberg in isiXhosa before the water reached the bridge?
