Amathole Museum: Huberta
What actually happens
Huberta the hippo walked about 1,600 km down the coast from Zululand between 1928 and 1931. Around here, people still find their way the way she did: by landmarks and by asking. “Next to KFC. Behind the post office.”
Why people doubt it
Maps here were drawn by those who owned land, for those who taxed it. A map that cannot say “opposite the rank” is a map for someone else.
Where it could stick
Directions that speak the way people do: landmark first, street name second. Spoken in isiXhosa, saved offline, shared by voice note.
From the classroom
Huberta walked about 1,600 km. On a 1:50 000 map that is 32 metres of paper.
Imagine
What if the map gave directions the way your aunt does?
